India got his first individual Olympic gold medal in 2008 Beijing Olympic when Abhinav Bindra won the 10 meter air rifle event. Abhinav Bindra engrave his name into India’s sport history. The 25 year bachelor, Abhinav Bhindra, is Chandigarh based business man, holding B.B.A. (Bachelor of Business Administration) from the University of Colorado, US.

India had previously won eight gold medals in the Olympic hockey tournament, but never in an individual sport, and Bindra victory has changed the face of India sport. Bindra defeated Zhu Qinan, the host of 2008 Olympic and Henri Hakkinen a man from Finland, both of them won the silver and bronze medals respectively. Bhindra was only in the fourth position until his last round, and managed to score near 10.8 points to win the gold medal defeating the Chinese champion who managed to score only 10.5 in the last round.

Bindra was the youngest Indian participant at the 2000 Olympic Games. His present coach is Gabriela Buhlmann from Basel, Switzerland, who trained him in Germany before the Olympics. He participated in the 2000 Olympics and achieved a score of 590 which placed him 11th in the qualification round, and was unable to qualify for the finals because only the top 8 competent compete in the finals.

The game of Kho-Kho

Kho- Kho is a game of Indian origin and widely popular within the country. It originated at Pune Gymkana in the state of Maharashtra. Its team in India is called Kho- Kho Federation of India (K.K.F.I).

The game is normally played in 2 innings by 12 nominated players out of 15, on each side. Initially 9 players start the game and 3 are kept as reserve. One team acts as the chasers and the other is known as the defenders or runners. In the game, the chaser pursues the runners; tags and touches them and makes them out. Each team has to chase and defend for 9 minutes twice in a match.

Field of Kho-Kho
The field is basically rectangular in shape and is 27 meters in length and 15 meters in breadth. There are two rectangles at the end. One side of the rectangle is 16 meter and the other side is 2.70 meters.

Levels of rafting

Rafting has an international scale of difficulty for rapids, with I being the easiest and VI being technically unrunnable.

Class I: Easy. Fast moving water with riffles and small waves. Few obstructions, all obvious and easily missed with little training. Risk to swimmers is slight; self-rescue is easy.

Class II: Novice. Straightforward rapids with wide, clear channels which are evident without scouting. Occasional maneuvering may be required, but rocks and medium sized waves are easily missed by trained white water rafters.

Class III: Intermediate. Rapids with moderate, irregular waves which may be difficult to avoid and which can swamp an open canoe. Complex maneuvers in fast white water and good boat control in tight passages or around ledges are often required.

Class IV: Advanced. Intense and powerful, yet predictable white water rapids, requiring precise boat handling in turbulent water. Depending on the character of the river, it may feature large, unavoidable waves and holes or constricted passages demanding fast maneuvers under pressure.

Class V: Expert. Extremely long, obstructed, or very violent rapids which expose paddlers to added risk. White water rafting in “Class V” rivers is only recommended for expert rafters. Drops may contain large, unavoidable waves and holes or steep, congested chutes with complex, demanding routes. Rapids may continue for long distances between pools, demanding a high level of fitness. What eddies exist may be small, turbulent, or difficult to reach. At the high end of the scale, several of these factors may be combined. Scouting is recommended but may be difficult. Swims are dangerous, and rescue is often difficult even for experts. Proper equipment, extensive experience, and practiced rescue skills are essential.

Class VI: Extreme and Exploratory. Rafting these white water runs has almost never been attempted and often exemplifies the extremes of difficulty, unpredictability and danger. White water rafting “Class VI” rapids is not for the faint of heart, the consequences of errors are very severe and rescue may be impossible.
